Line-up
The band's third album, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet arrangement of the previous albums. It was a more ferocious, constant effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. The more edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the maturation in the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard skills were also sharper, more complex, and less derivative on earlier efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live concert in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a new studio album a few months later, and went on a world tour help promote it. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old demos and tapes in search of a new record featuring songs that were never recorded before.
